Towards Photography is a platform for exhibitions, talks, workshops, interviews and essays, both on-site and online. The programme explores photography in its many forms through artistic practice, research and discussion. Its name draws on the 1983 book Towards a Philosophy of Photography by the media philosopher Vilém Flusser, whose far-sighted questions about the photographic medium invite us to keep asking what photography is and how it shapes the way we see and think.
Initiated by DFI e.V., an artist-led initiative, the platform emerged from the conceptual work on the German Institute for Photography (Deutsches Fotoinstitut – DFI) in Düsseldorf.
Under the artistic direction of Moritz Wegwerth, Towards Photography brings together artists, curators, theorists and researchers with partner institutions to develop projects and sustain a conversation about the photographic.
The visual identity and concept were developed in collaboration with Edi Winarni.
Towards Photography is supported by the Cultural Office of the City of Düsseldorf (Kulturamt der Landeshauptstadt Düsseldorf).
