Towards Photography is a platform for exhibitions, talks, workshops, and discursive formats, both on-site and online, initiated by the Verein zur Gründung und Förderung eines Deutschen Fotoinstituts – DFI e.V.
Emerging from the conceptual work on a future institute for photography, the project explores the evolving role of the medium in contemporary culture as well as its historical foundations.
The project takes its name from Vilém Flusser's 1983 book Towards a Philosophy of Photography, reflecting its core ethos: to maintain an ongoing, critical dialogue with the medium.
Launched in 2022 under the artistic direction of Moritz Wegwerth, the initiative provides a dedicated space to pursue questions about the medium’s future.
As both facilitator and host, Towards Photography brings together artists, theorists, researchers, and institutions to share ideas, reflect critically, and experiment.
The visual identity and conceptual development of the project were realized in collaboration with Edi Winarni.
Towards Photography is made possible by the support of the Cultural Office of the City of Düsseldorf.
