Shot in 3D, Omer Fast's film August is based on the life and artistic work of August Sander (1876-1964), one of the most influential photographers since the invention of the medium. August Sander lived and worked in Cologne, where his archive - which includes over 10,000 negatives and 6,000 original prints - has been part of the Photographische Sammlung/SK Stiftung Kultur since 1992. His worldwide popularity is due primarily to one series of works: In People of the 20th Century, Sander portrayed people across all social classes and occupational groups.
The film August brings Sander's iconic works to new life. It quotes Walter Benjamin, who described the work of his fellow artists as delicate empire, and contrasts the combination of scientific aspiration and artistic strength of expression with the reality of National Socialism. In surreal dream sequences, August Sander is caught up at the end of his life, by a Nazi, the death of his son, and other protagonists who populate his work.

BIO
Omer Fast was born in Jerusalem in 1972. He holds a BA in English from Tufts University, a BFA in Visual Arts from the Boston Museum School of Fine Arts and an MFA from Hunter College, City University of New York. Since finishing his studies in 2000, Fast has participated in over 150 international exhibitions, including solo shows at the Whitney Museum in New York, the Moderna Museet in Stockholm, the Dallas Museum of Art, Museum of Modern Art in Vienna and Martin-Gropius-Bau in Berlin. Group exhibitions include dOCUMENTA13, the Venice Biennale, the Guggenheim Museum in New York and the Centre Pompidou in Paris. Fast received the Bucksbaum award for his work “The Casting” at the Whitney Biennial in 2008 and has also won the National Galerie’s Prize for Young Art in Berlin in 2009 with his work “Nostalgia”. His work is in several international collections including Tate Modern, the Guggenheim Museum, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the Centre Pompidou.
