Towards Photography is a series of talks, exhibitions and events initiated by the Verein zur Gründung und Förderung eines Deutschen Fotoinstituts e.V.. The program's title refers to Vilém Flusser's 1983 book Towards a Philosophy of Photography and reflects the self-image of the series, which was launched in 2022: We explore an ongoing, critical dialogue with the medium of photography.
What debates shape the medium at present? What can we learn from the early days of photography and where is medium moving towards?
In pursuit of these fundamental questions, Towards Photography sees itself as an interdisciplinary forum for artists, theorists, academics, authors and the local art and culture scene.
Talks, lectures and workshops promote direct exchange, both online and on site. Exhibitions and film screenings offer space for analytical reflection and artistic debate. Cooperation is at the heart of our work: as a platform and host, we cooperate with artists, initiatives, educational institutions and collections. Our focus is on positions that work at the boundaries of the medium and in transdisciplinary or experimental contexts.
