Mohamed Bourouissa:
From the beginning to "Network"

The core of Mohamed Bourouissa's work is the examination of the medium of photography. He takes this as a starting point to develop three-dimensional sculptures or expansive installations that reveal a multi-perspectivity in comparison to the flat image. The Paris-based artist questions the contemporary mechanisms of image generation. In regard to this, he examines the staging and representation of social position that becomes visible in photographs. At the same time, his work negotiates the medial (under)representation of individuals and groups, their habitus and their codes. But although his works have a decidedly political and sociocritical agenda, they do not focus on the depiction of social inequities. Instead, they break through the repetitive image streams of our present by asserting themselves as a strong counterweight. Mohamed Bourouissa's works show self-confident and creative representatives of urban youth culture in gentrified cities as well as remote suburbs.

In the interview for Towards Photography, Mohamed Bourouissa talks about his beginnings at the Sorbonne Université in Paris, his first projects and related research over many years, to current approaches exploring the possibilities of AI technology.
